This booklet is designed to accompany the Southam Heritage Collection’s Inn Trail map and to offer extra background on the development of the town’s inns, public houses and hotels. It is not intended as a full or definitive guide; in fact, you will soon see that very little is known about some of the places that once played a part in Southam’s story.

You will find a brief overview of the history of inns in England and the legislation that shaped today’s licensing laws. There is also an explanation of the differences between beer and ale, as well as between alehouses, inns, taverns and public houses. The booklet then introduces the main pubs in the town, following the trail route from south to north. The accompanying map should help you make your way along the path.
